How Arabs Treat Terrorists
Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's President, whose representative at the U.N., Boutros-Ghali, has spearheaded the drive to have Israel subjected to sanctions for deporting 400 Hamas terrorists, had this to say about the same type of terrorists in Egypt: "Democracy can be very bad on those who break the law." When asked whether, instead of using force, the Egyptian Government would open a dialogue with the terrorists, Mubarak answered: "We will not allow the proliferation of terrorism." He conceded that some violations may have been committed by the Egyptian security forces, but "this can happen in any country, anywhere in the world." A reporter asked about the death sentences, by hanging, and the prison terms meted out by an Alexandria military court, which were ratified by Mubarak, although the court had no legal jurisdiction. Mubarak answered, "Litigation before civilian courts is slow. We are facing a situation where delay and procrastination are unacceptable. I am simply exercising my powers.
