The Oxford English Dictionary gives the following definition of the term "Agent Provocateur";

"An agent employed to induce or incite a suspected person or group to commit an incriminating act."

This institution was first used in Czarist Russia, especially during the 1905 Socialist Revolution. The Czarist Government had paid agents who infiltrated students’ radical groups, and incited them to demonstrations which were then easy to subdue.

However, profound shock spread throughout Israel when the news leaked out that the Eyal cell had been set up by a undercover agent paid by the Prime Minister’s office, Avishai Raviv. It was also he who manufactured the SS-Rabin posters, which he took before TV cameras, but which were never part of any Likud rally. They were made up strictly to embarrass the legitimate opposition, the LIKUD party. Like in Czarist Russia the "agents provocateurs" targeted impressionable students. Further acts of provocation have now also been traced to the Prime Minister’s "agent provocateur", especially the incident last summer when the media reported that Jewish settlers had murdered a Palestinian in Khalkul, near Hebron. The charge was pressed very hard on the US media, and the New York Times devoted an entire editorial to the charge under the headline "Settler Violence in Israel". It did not take long before the truth came out; the murder was committed by Palestinians, not Jews. Yet the Prime Minister’s office delayed the truth, and the story was never rectified in the press. The air against the opposition was already poisoned. And who was in charge of this dastardly misinformation? Again, Raviv the Prime Minister’s paid agent!

It is a sign of great weakness that the Government had to resort to such devious "dirty tricks" to bolster its "Peace" policy against an opposition represented by more than half of the Jewish population. In an open, democratic society free flow of truthful information is essential. Underhanded deception and corruption of truth leads to division and disunity.

Also we hear much about invectives which the opposition is reported to have used against the Government. But what is the record of the Government when it comes to invectives? Here is a partial list of the kind of invectives used to degrade, embarrass and vilify the opposition: Ayatollahs, racists, cry babies, barbarians, enemies of Israel, go back to Brooklyn, pariahs, rabble, allies of Hamas, propellers, enemies of Israel, embarrassment to Judaism. It should also be remembered that during the reign of Menachem Begin, he and Gen. Sharon were incessantly called "murderer", "Hitler", etc. by the leftists.

All these facts must be borne in mind during the forthcoming Madison Square Garden rally which is promoted in the interest of "healing, getting together." Only the other day we heard on Ted Koppel’s Town Meeting TV program, that the Labor Minister Ramon cried out: "Even if we have a majority of only 1% we will crush the opposition!" Is that the way to heal and get together?

The only way the healing can take place, is to review the course of the "peace" process in a way that the profound fears and worries of at least half of the Jewish population are taken into account, and that security for the entire population - both in Juda, Shomron and the Golan Heights - becomes the prime consideration. The Jewish people must be convinced that men like Peres, Beilin and Savir - now in charge of the "peace" negotiations - can be trusted with the fate of Hebron, Jerusalem, the Golan Heights and the rest of Juda and Shomron. No amount of high-power PR exercises must divert our attention from the real issue: the course Of the "peace" process which till now has been based on non-stop surrender of land by Israel, including historic and strategic areas. Will these men hold the PLO to its solemn commitments, made before President Clinton and the entire world, (1.) To abrogate the murderous PLO Covenant, which in all its clauses calls for the dissolution of Israel, the ending of Zionism, and the deportation of Jews from Israel and (2.) To stop terrorism and bring terrorists to real justice? We must hope that an open debate on these, most fundamental issues, will soon take place.
